Abstract
Twenty-first century Spain owes much of its current political, cultural, and economic identity to the Civil War and Francisco Franco’s totalitarian, fascist regime that lasted for the better half of the century. Spanish citizens’ individual memories of Franco and his regime, whether positive or negative, directly influence the current debate of how or if Franco is remembered and memorialized. Francisco Franco’s totalitarian regime demonstrates the idea of collective memory and its influence can be seen throughout political opinion today.
