The story collection Your Future Career features eight stories centered on the concept of work identity. What we do for a living—our employment, our job, our occupation—has a distinct impact on how we see ourselves, and how we position ourselves within the world. The stories in this collection follow a “career arc,” beginning with characters just entering the workforce and ending with those who have recently retired. But what unites these characters is a struggle to maintain agency over their work identities. They’ve all had their personal narratives overshadowed, in some regard, by the work they do, or want to do. Their resulting attempts to regain a sense of control fuel the stories within this collection. Blended with wordplay reminiscent of Sam Lipsyte and tinged with the humor of Lorrie Moore, Your Future Career offers a unique examination of how we choose to occupy our professional time, and the ramifications of those choices.
