Abstract
In this qualitative study, the topic of stigma related to sexuality in older adulthood was investigated. The research questions explored were whether or not older adults perceived themselves to be stigmatized in relation to their sexuality and in what situations, if any, stigma was experienced. Participants were eight adults, aged sixty-five and up. Semi-structured interviews were conducted using guiding questions based on the sense-making theory. Results suggested although most participants did not initially perceive themselves to be stigmatized, all participants had experienced sexual stigma in various settings. The results of this study reflect previous findings that many older adults experience sexual stigma and prompt the need for further research surrounding the social experience in older adulthood both in relation to sexuality and beyond sexuality.
