Abstract
We Bury This Noise is a story collection about identity; search for identity, loss of identity, confusion over identity, changing of identity, absence of identity. The characters in this collection are often on the brink of certain identities—girlhood, womanhood, adulthood, motherhood—and find themselves reaching from one realm of identity to another. The stories here are concerned with the “simple prisons” often formed by identity, whether it be through relationships, mental health, addiction, family. We Bury This Noise asks a reader to follow narratives of limbo and searching, oceans and outer space, escape and absence, fraught relationships and broken families—all while excavating layers of transient identities. With the help and stimulation of authors such as Ramona Ausubel, Kelly Link, Karen Russell, George Saunders, and Aimee Bender, this collection uses both the real and the unreal, the impossible and the mysterious, to tackle the nuances of identity.
