Abstract
This thesis explores the port of Charleston's complicated and often unpredictable road to economic success in the first half of the twentieth century. Arguably, the promotional vision conceived by the Port Utilities Commission, the South Carolina State Ports Authority, and the Charleston Development Board to revive the port and alter Charleston's image of a "sleeping city" contributed to the port's later success. This thesis also expounds upon how these particular groups: (1) designed and employed port promotional strategies; (2) altered and maintained port promotional strategies over time; (3) aimed to establish a modern, Charleston business community; and, (4) aided in reviving the port and the city of Charleston.
